You play Sanjay Dutt’s wife in Musafir?
Yes. Yet, I have a track with the three other leading men as well — Adiyta Pancholi, Anil Kapoor and Mahesh Manjrekar.
You have done some objectionable scenes in Musafir?
The subject has been handled with a lot of class. I have not crossed the limits I have set for myself. Yes, I am not the simpleton of Maine Dil Tujhko Diya where I made my debut but still...
Oomph and sexuality have become an essential ingredient for today’s heroine. There’s no escape route.
But you are doing a deglamourised role sans make-up as well?
Yeah. That’s the other kind of cinema. I have signed Buddhadev Dasgupta’s Kaalpurush (Rahul Bose, Mithun Chakraborty) which is being made in Bengali.
But that was Bipasha Basu’s role?
Bipasha didn’t do it. Does that mean I am forbidden to take it up?
You and Bipasha have a war going?
Now that’s another thing fabricated by the media. I was supposed to do John Matthew’s film which she eventually went on to do. And, she was supposed to do Buddhadev Dasgupta’s film which eventually I am doing. So the media started its usual speculation. These so-called scoops are quite often two and two equals five.
But Bipasha says that there is hardly any money in Buddhadev Dasgupta’s flick?
She is entitled to her perspective. As for me, I do some things for money and some things to learn. Working in Buddhadev’s film is a matter of immense honour. I haven’t even talked money.
My role is in stark contrast to my current image in Bollywood. I am being trained in Bengali to get the correct meaning and nuances of the lines.
What is Kaalpurush all about?
The film is based on a novel America America written by the director himself. The story revolves around a man (Bose) and his connection with his past (through his father played by Mithun), present (through his wife played by me) and future (through his children).
How did you feel while turning on the heat in Musafir?
Anil is a veteran and there’s a lot that you can learn from him. Mahesh Manjrekar, of course, is also a director and brings that sensibility to his acting. And, what can I say about Sanju baba? He’s just so cool and chilled out and puts you completely at ease. I was not uncomfortable.
It’s said that you and Musafir director Sanjay Gupta were having a scene?
Pleeease! These are all media-fabricated stories. There was nothing between Gupta and me. He treated me as an actress and I treated him as a director only.
It was also said that you two finally parted ways and Gupta went back to his wife?
That is just an extension of the fabrications.
You have a war going with Priyanka Chopra too?
Again media speculation. Priyanka was dropped from 'Benaam', which I am doing now. I heard she was a bit upset. If I don’t do it, someone else would. What’s wrong in that?
Tell us about the exchange programme with BBC.
The BBC approached me to undertake an exchange programme with Emma Bunton. She came to Mumbai and did all the things I do. Now, I will be going to London and Bristol to do things she does. It’s fun. I will be coming back on December 4.
