What is Calcutta Mail all about?
The film is a crime thriller. The story is about an individual who lands up in Calcutta one day. He does not know what is in store for him. Worse, he is accused of having committed a murder even though he has nothing to do with it. Calcutta Mail is about his grit, courage and determination to prove the accusers wrong.
You are known to be particular about the directors you work with. So how was the experience working with Sudhir Mishra. This is the first film that brought you and Sudhir together
Sudhir was very clear-cut about the story of the film and what he wanted from me. The best thing about Sudhir, I noticed, was that he had the knack of assigning the right kind of role to the right person. Because he was clear-cut about the way he wanted to move about his film, I did not have put in any extra effort. I would come, give my shot and return to my van. There was no tension on the sets anytime. The other reason why I said yes to the film was because the entire film was going to be shot in Kolkata. I got to see the city from close quarters and Kolkata is a very beautiful city. There are a few films I have enjoyed doing and Calcutta Mail is one of them. I would definitely look forward to working with Sudhir Mishra again.
Calcutta Mail has you working with Rani Mukherjee and Manisha Koirala once again. You have done a film with both-1942: A Love Story and Nayak respectively
Yes! And it's great being paired with them once again! Manisha and Rani have put in their best in the film. I remember shooting with Manisha for 1942 she had done an excellent job. Ditto Rani!
Okay, did the failure of Armaan affect you?
I felt sad, of course! I enjoyed doing Armaan. Working with Amitabh Bachchan has been one of the experiences that I will most cherish. In fact, I agreed to do it because Amitabh had been cast in the film. I wanted to work with him ever since my Shakti days.
Armaan was also your first film with a woman director
Yes! I have liked Honey's work as a writer and I was happy that she was making her debut as an independent director. There is immense different in how a male and female director visualizes different situations. Compared to male directors, Honey was more restrained and fine and that is one of her greatest strengths as a director. Also she was always calm on the sets. She dealt with calamity with utmost ease never once losing her temper maintaining the ambience harmonious on the sets.
Could you tell us something about Allwyn Kalicharan?
I have been asked this question several times. I keep saying my character Allwyn Kalicharan has shades of Munna, my character in Tezaab and Lakhan, my character in Ram Lakhan it is a union of both! The film is about how he uproots evil and corruption in society by the power of his fist and sometimes wit. I thoroughly enjoyed doing the film.
What other films do you have on hand?
I'm currently working on Dharmesh Darshan's Bewafaa. There's also a film with Sanjay Gupta. Satish Kaushik and I are also planning a film together.
