Whatever Mahesh Manjrekar had to say about Mumbai chawl life and the underworld, he already did with Vaastav, which was just a song-and-dance version of Satya - so the sequel Hathyar is quite pointless. The few moments of sensitivity, emotional resonance and character development that Vaastav had are wiped out in Hathyar - which is a non-stop, gruesome bloodfest.
'Hathyar' follows up on the life of Raghunath in 'Vaastav' and shows what happens to the family of a gangster after he is dead. Raghubhai (Sanjay Dutt) who is shot dead by his mother (Reema) in Vaastav, left behind a look alike son Rohit.
Rohit wants to get an education and be a boxer, but his past catches up with him. His mother (Namrata Shirodkar) is forced to return to prostitution to pay for her father-in-law's (Shivaji Satyam) medical treatment. He has a close friend Munna (Sachin Khedekar). Rohit in his teenage years accidentally commits a murder and like his father becomes a big time don. A gangster (Shakti Kapoor) spring him out of jail and a new Boxerbhai is born. At this time he enters the underworld crime scene through big time political games.
Rohit falls in love with Shilpa, (Shilpa Shetty). They get married and have a daughter. Due to a misunderstanding Shilpa parts with Rohit and stays with Munna, whom she considers a brother. Eventually the news reaches Rohit and in a fit of rage Rohit kills Munna, his one and only true friend.
With the death of his dear friend, he starts drinking a lot and his hands become more guns crazy and he loses the meaning of life.

In Vaastav too, a brush with the underworld and the brutality of cops had turned Raghu into a gangster. In Hathyar, the son goes the same way. But Rohit is far more violent, numbing the viewers by the continuous and shockingly casual killings.
All the clichés of the gangster movie are trotted out - corrupt cops, slimy politicians, and ruthless power brokers. The romance with chawl girl Gauri is hurriedly dispensed with. Macho men speaking Mumbai street lingo, that one wild 'Goli Maaro Bheje Mein' style hooligan dance, an item number in a bar- every regular tapori elements in there. Sanjay Dutt had given an award - winning performance in Vaastav, here he goes throught the motions with boredom. Sharad Kapoor continuously chewing gum does not make as effective a sidekick as "dedh footiya" (Sanjay Narvekar) of Vaastav.
Shilpa Shetty leaves her mark in a natural performance and looks beautiful.
In spite of the frenzied action, Hathyar is difficult to sit through.
