'Gangaajal' is the story of an honest cop’s fight against the corrupt system and comes out a winner. Though the storyline doesn’t seem to be new, the perfect screenplay and direction makes it different and worth watching. Once again Ajay Devgan comes out a winner with his brilliant histrionics displayed on the screen. Prakash Jha also incorporates some true incidents from the horrific ‘Bhagalpur blindings’ case of 1979-1980. The story has good grip right from the start to the climax.

Coming to story, Amit kumar (Ajay Devgan) is appointed as an SP of Tejpur. He is a sincere and an honest cop. Tejpur is dominated by gang lord Sadhu Yadav (Mohan Joshi) and his son, Sunder Yadav (Yashpal Sharma). Right from the DIG to a constable all are at the mercy of Sadhu Yadav. Sadhu Yadav bribes every one. No one ever dared to go against Yadav. Amit tries to refine his subordinates as a result two of his subordinates Bachcha Yadav and Mangni Ram try to be sincere in their job. Once Bachcha nabs Sunder Yadav and brings him to station. But he escapes. Later Sunder Yadav's henchmen create a nuisance on the streets when Amit beats them to pulp and drag them to the police station. Amit's colleagues, Inspector Khan (Ayub Khan), Inspector Tiwari (Anup Soni), Bachcha Yadav are egged on by their SP's brave act. So after Amit leaves for home that night, Bachcha and the others give vent to their anger by torturing them and finally blinding them by pouring acid on their eyes. The acid here is referred to as 'Gangaajal'. Entire Tejpur hails the SP's new form of punishment. An enquiry is set up against Amit Kumar and his men. In the meanwhile, Bachcha Yadav is brutally killed by Sunder for turning a traitor while the other officers to save their skin deny their involvement in the blindings case. Amit takes upon himself as he assumes responsibility for the heinous crime but the villagers are not ready to let go of their SP. An angry mob swept by the weapon of Gangaajal (acid) wants justice then and there. They want Amit to do the same for Sadhu Yadav and his son. The climax deals with Amit's decision on how to treat the culprits.
Jha keeps the narrative devoid of unwanted comedy tracks and romance angles. Wayne Sharpe´s background score intensifies the restlessness in the proceedings. Ajay Devgan slips into the character perfectly and he adds a lot of credibility and depth to the character. Gracy Singh as a supportive wife to a sincere police cop did a god job. Other supporting actors (Mukesh Tiwari, Anoop Soni, Ayub Khan Chetan Pandit and Akhilendra Mishra) as the SP’s colleagues have strongly etched characterizations. Especially Mukesh Tiwari as Bachcha needs a special mention.
