Debutant director Rakesh Mehra tries a stylish flick
with Aks-The reflection, and succeeds to quite extent
in setting trend of Hollywoodisque style. The Film shot
in a classic suspense.
It shows the Indian Home Minister visiting Hungary
with Manu Verma
(Amitabh Bachchan) a security officer. Second shot shows
the minister being shot by Manu. But the actual killer
is somebody called Raghavan (Manoj Bajpai), who wears
Manu's mask. Raghawan is a Psychopath, who's mentally
challenged brother is a mask expert.
The story then shifts to Delhi, where Verma unearths
a plot to assassinate the PM. The movie takes on a bizarre
murder spree, which brings Verma to Mumbai. The killer
always leaves a small mask for Mannu Verma as a clue.
The scene then cuts to Verma's wife Supriya (Nandita
Das) and Raghavan's ladylove Neeta (Raveena Tandon)
a cabaret dance.
After a struggle Mannu Verma succeeds in capturing
the dreaded Raghavan after losing his close buddy. Raghavan
refuses to divulge anything about the floppy that consist
of the blueprint of the PM's murder. So after a trial,
he was sentenced to death. But in a scuffle where, Raghavan
tries to flee, Verma shoots him dead. Till this point,
the film is captivating. After the interval however,
it falters as the script loses its grip.
Manu Verma is posed by Raghavan's spirit and his commits
crime to the extent of making love to Neeta, and raping
Supriya, his wife. It's at this point the film, actually
becomes impossible to accept. Supriya, in order to cure
her husband of the spirit, approaches a curer a moral
healer (sadhu). The film ends with the usual note of
good triumphing over evil. Aks is part-suspense, part-supernatural
Off the cast Amitabh Bachchan excels.
He is in one world simply out of the world. After 'Agnipath'
this is no doubt one of the best performances. The star
cast is the USP of this part-suspense, part-supernatural
thriller. Nandita Das plays Amitabh’s youthful wife;
while mast-mast girl Raveena Tandon is, as usual, a
picture of oomph and glamour.
Raveena’s character has shades of dark. Manoj Bajpai
tries to live up to his expectations and succeeds in
his attempt. Gulzar and Anu Malik are teaming up for
the first time in Aks.
