Kamal Haasan’s performs a huge… always larger than
life. He is, all ready with his latest bilingual project
— Abhay. The basis of the film is a novel written by
Kamal himself 17 years ago. The novel was later serialised
by a newspaper. Some changes have been incorporated
into the storyline keeping in mind the changing times.
Kamal Haasan dons dual role in Abhay. Set in the capital
city of Delhi during a season of winter, Abhay is the
story of two brothers, completely different from each
other in terms of characteristics and attitude to life.
One brother is Major Vijay Kumar (Kamal), engaged to
a television reporter (played by Raveena Tandon). Vijay
Kumar‘s deranged brother Abhay (Kamal again) has spent
22 years in various mental asylums. Despite many requests
from the family, the asylum authorities refuse to release
Abhay because they consider him really dangerous.
Just before Vijay Kumar is to tie the knot with her
girlfriend, the couple go to the asylum to meet Abhay
and to apologise to him for not getting him out of the
asylum. But things go awfully wrong the moment Vijay
and his girlfriend enter the asylum. At that moment
begins the most horrid saga Delhiites have to come to
terms with.
Raveena Tandon and Manisha Koirala are the leading
ladies. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have given the music. Apart
from portraying two very different roles, Kamal Haasan
has written the screenplay for the film.
